ARBROATH PROVING A CLASS ACT

- ALASDAIR FRASER

DICK CAMPBELL called it a full-time mentality at a part-time club — with working-class lads willing to do exactly that: work. Luke Donnelly, Saturday’s match-winner in Inverness, insists employment status doesn’t even enter the Arbroath players’ thoughts. John Robertson, exasperated and angry by the end of play, was the manager left feeling like he had been given only half a day’s shift from his team, labelling it ‘pathetic’. It was the Red Lichties who drew from deep wells of resolve and, in the end, created the better and more plentiful chances. Striker Donnelly, who took his opportunity close in just after the break, reckons the key to an incredible first half of the season for Arbroath is refusing to view themselves as part-timers. It is a state of mind that has taken them to three points off the promotion play-off zone after 19 games, but don’t tell manager Campbell they are in anything other than a survival fight. Donnelly said: ‘We go out against every team in this league believing we can get a result. ‘Results have shown anyone can beat anyone in this league, so as long as we go out there well-organised and ready to work hard, we give ourselves a chance. ‘I thought we were good against Dundee, Dundee United and Ayr, but maybe let ourselves down a wee bit last week against Queen of the South. ‘It has been a tough run of fixtures so it was good to bounce back and get a win. ‘The part-time element doesn’t come into it for us. We prepare professionally and go out to compete in every game.’
