The answer’s No... now let’s move on

-

SO Boris Johnson has finally, officially, informed Nicola Sturgeon, that there will be no independence referendums. The Prime Minister stated: ‘The UK Government will continue to uphold the democratic decision of the Scottish people and the promise that you made to them.’ As one who voted to remain back in the 2014 referendum, I have nothing but respect for Boris. He’s hit the button right on the head. As for Nicola Sturgeon, she reacted by stating: ‘Tories are terrified of Scotland’s right to choose — because they know that when given the choice we’ll choose independence. Tories have no positive case for the Union — so all they can do is attempt to deny democracy. It will not stand.’ The Scottish people voted to remain in the UK. Since that day, you have banged on relentlessly about an Indyref 2. Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, a unified country formed 313 years ago, and one of the fastest-growing economies in the world right now. Your constant infatuation with breaking up the United Kingdom is having the opposite reaction by the vast majority of the Scottish people. They have rejected your political neurosis. As the old saying goes, Miss Sturgeon, wake up and smell the coffee.

AfTER having her demand for referendum powers denied by the Prime Minister, Miss Sturgeon shows yet again she will not take ‘No’ for an answer. She intends to ‘ask the Scottish parliament to again endorse Scotland’s right to choose’. This comes after her weeks of campaigning before the December election in which she was not even a candidate. Taxpayers are funding Miss Sturgeon and her MSPs very handsomely to spend their time agitating about an issue that is not within their remit. That is, we are paying for a party political policy that many of us oppose. Can anyone remember the last time Holyrood did anything valuable regarding the issues that are devolved, that is, those that are within its remit?

WHILE doubtless the majority in Scotland will be delighted Boris Johnson has spelt out so clearly the constitutional, political and moral realities of Nicola Sturgeon’s demand to hold another independence referendum whenever she fancies, there is an aspect of this that should concern everyone living in Scotland. It is inevitable, now even more than before, that she and the rest of the SNP will focus, not on the effective management of our public services, but on ceaselessly campaigning for independence until the 2021 election. And undoubtedly beyond.

MARTIN REDFERN, Edinburgh.
