It’s no joke! Comic Fred walks away from horror crash with just bruises

- By Annie Butterworth

COMEDIAN Fred MacAulay escaped with only bruises after a horror rush-hour crash left his car a mangled wreck.

Following the accident, the broadcaster shared images showing his £31,000 Land Rover Discovery badly damaged at the side of the road.

The 63-year-old was left with ‘bruised ribs’ and taken to hospital, but was not seriously injured in the crash.

Police confirmed that a second vehicle was involved in the collision last week on the A9 in Perthshire.

Mr MacAulay did not disclose details of the accident, although on social media he alluded to the other driver ‘going faster than I was’.

The Perth-born stand-up, who presented his own show on BBC Radio Scotland for 18 years, thanked emergency services who were called to the scene near Dunblane.

Mr MacAulay posted images on social media that showed the aftermath of the incident, including his battered Land Rover, as well as emergency services at the scene.

He also thanked staff at the accident and emergency department of Forth Valley Hospital in Larbert, Stirlingshire.

The other vehicle involved is thought to have crossed the central reservation and ended up in the opposite carriageway.

Mr MacAulay wrote: ‘This happened last Tuesday. I’m absolutely OK. Bruised ribs only.

‘My thanks to the emergency services and accident and emergency at Forth Valley. Thanks also to those of you who let me know you witnessed it.

‘I’m sure Police Scotland will have been in touch. Take care on the roads this week. No one plans an accident – and I still can’t believe what happened.’

He added on Twitter: ‘Very lucky! As was other driver, who was going faster than I was. There was nothing in my driving test about someone speeding, losing control and ploughing into my car.’

Police Scotland said officers attended a two-car crash on the northbound carriageway of the A9 last week.

A spokesman said: ‘We were called at 8am to a report of a two-car crash on the A9 north of Dunblane on Tuesday, February 4. An ambulance attended but there were no reports of injuries. The road was blocked and re-opened a short time later.’

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said they sent three appliances to the scene. A spokesman said the two people who were involved in the crash were treated by paramedics at the scene.

STV news presenter Gordon Chree said he witnessed the aftermath of the accident. He tweeted: ‘I passed this at the time, there was a second car which seemed to have vaulted the central barrier and was up the bank on the opposite side – hope everyone okay.’

Dozens of Mr MacAulay’s friends and fellow celebrities responded to the pictures he shared of the crash scene.

Singer Amy Macdonald wrote: ‘Glad you’re okay Fred.’

Mock the Week host Dara Ó Briain posted: ‘Jesus wept Fred, I’m relieved, and amazed you’re still with us.’

TV presenter Lee McKenzie wrote: ‘Hope you are recovered and thank goodness the car took most of the impact.’

Author and broadcaster Muriel Gray tweeted: ‘That’s terrifying. Hope you’re okay mate.’

Deacon Blue singer Ricky Ross said: ‘Wow! Glad you are okay Fred.’

Anstruther-born radio presenter Edith Bowman said: ‘Hope you are okay.’

And former Olympian Sir Chris Hoy said: ‘Jeez... scary stuff. Glad you walked out okay.’
