IS THAT JANE HAIR YOU’RE READING...?

Salon offers clients chance to brush up on literature

- By Sarah Ward

FLICKING through a few glossy fashion magazines while waiting your turn is a familiar part of most visits to the hairdresser.

But one salon chain is now offering an alternative to the unrealistic glamour of the likes of Cosmo and Grazia – by giving its customers a chance to brush up on literary classics.

Clients at Chapter One Hair Spa, based in Dalkeith, Midlothian, can peruse the likes of Jane Eyre, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mocking Bird and A Tale of Two Cities, while having their tresses teased.

Natalie Clugston, co-founder of Chapter One, explained: ‘Working in this industry, I see young people, including our team, feeling pressured into looking like celebrities in the pages of magazines.

‘While it’s great to have role models and be inspired, when the tone becomes negative and almost bullying, it’s time to say enough is enough. We’d like to replace those conversations with something different, something good for the mind and soul.

‘I want our team to be influenced by real people, achieving real goals that make a difference to people’s lives – not feeling insecure or that they have to be something they’re not.’

Clients having complex cuts and colours can be in the Lothian salons – in Eskbank, Haddington and Newtongrange – for hours, giving plenty of time to read.

Miss Clugston added: ‘It’s in our name, Chapter One. We love a good tale, so we hope our initiative encourages our clients and team to get reading.’

Chapter One co-founder Paul Bertram said: ‘In recent years we have seen an unhealthy focus and obsession with influencers, creating a vicious circle. We just want to get the balance back.’
