Dilemma for FA as Spurs probe extraordinary scenes

- By ADRIAN KAJUMBA

THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION are facing a dilemma over whether to charge Eric Dier after his shock confrontation with a fan after Tottenham’s FA Cup exit. The FA have launched an investigation into the extraordinary scenes following Spurs’ fifth-round defeat against Norwich when Dier vaulted rows of seats to drag his younger brother Patrick away after he became involved in a post-match bust-up with a fan. The FA will seek observations from Spurs, who began their own probe straight after Wednesday’s penalty shoot-out loss, and Dier before deciding whether to take any action. Midfielder Dier reacted angrily after spotting his brother involved in a row which began when the England star’s sibling took exception to the midfielder being insulted. Given the circumstances, manager Jose Mourinho believes Tottenham would be wrong to take disciplinary against Dier. And Sportsmail understands there are some concerns within Spurs about the message that would be sent out if a player ends up in hot water with the FA effectively for protecting their family following offensive fan behaviour. Dier was ushered away from the flashpoint by bystanders, stewards and security staff through a door at the back of the stand. Patrick Dier joined the Spurs midfielder in the home dressing room as club chiefs immediately began trying to piece together what had happened. Mourinho also spoke to Dier privately about the incident after the game, delivering the same understanding message that he did in his press conference about the 26-year-old doing ‘what we professionals cannot do but probably what every one of us would do’. Spurs’ probe continued yesterday as they gathered further witness accounts and reviewed CCTV footage of the area where the trouble took place in a bid to build up a clearer picture of what took place. Tottenham are confident they know who the supporter — seen on video footage trying to flee the scene — is and intend to speak to him as part of their investigation. The Metropolitan Police said in a statement: ‘Police are aware of an incident following the conclusion of the Tottenham v Norwich match on Wednesday, March 4, where a player entered the crowd. ‘No complaints or allegations have been received at this time.’
