Thandie: I’m passing torch on to my girl, 15
THANDIE Newton has revealed how starring in a film with her daughter was an opportunity to ‘pass the torch on’.
The actress also said she hopes 15-year-old Nico won’t have to run the same ‘sprints’ as she did when starting out.
The pair star in the upcoming sci-fi thriller Reminiscence, set in a near future when sea levels and temperatures have risen.
It is Nico’s second film role after her debut in Tim Burton’s Dumbo remake last year. Miss Newton, 47, said: ‘It was like passing the torch on.’ Referring to the challenges she faced herself, she added: ‘I hope [Nico] doesn’t have to run the sprints I had to run. I know she won’t have to.
‘She’ll run different sprints. She’s amazing.’ Miss Newton has two other children with her husband, screenwriter Ol Parker – daughter Ripley, 19, and son Booker, six.
Reflecting on how the film industry has changed to reflect cultural diversity, she told Porter magazine: ‘Things won’t manifest that quickly.’ She had experienced frustration at the pace of change but it was ‘tempered because for 30 years I’ve watched and agitated – I’ve disrupted’.
Miss Newton added: ‘We have to keep it going. If it does seem cosmetic, we have to push harder.’ The actress, who has had roles in BBC crime drama Line of Duty and the dystopian TV hit Westworld, insisted she was optimistic about the future.
‘We’re seeing beautiful things happen in the world that are completely counter to… all the negative sides,’ she added.
