UK Athletics chiefs warn their athletes and staff against travelling abroad

- By RIATH AL-SAMARRAI Athletics Correspondent

UK ATHLETICS have cancelled plans for foreign training camps and told staff to not travel abroad as a measure to tackle the coronavirus. While some British athletes are abroad training for the Olympics and will not be compelled to return, the firm advice from the organisation is against further travel out of the country from this point. That sits with an email sent from UKA chairman Nic Coward in which it was explained that UKA staff will not be going abroad to support athletes who choose to stay away. The disruption caused to Tokyo preparations has been pronounced for all nations, with training camps abandoned and tune-up races cancelled.

Further alterations to the global calendar will be announced today when the Diamond League confirm a series of delays to the start of their season.

Sportsmail understands the opening meet in Doha on April 17 will be pushed back until after the Olympics, with a new slot in September or October more likely. The following two events in China — the first in a location that had not yet been announced on May 9 and the second in Shanghai on

May 16 — will also be postponed to a later date. The changes will be formally announced by the organisers today. It comes after meetings over the weekend involving those running each of the 14 meets, including London on July 4. If no other postponements are forthcoming, Stockholm is expected to be the first event on the schedule on May 24. Further disruption seems inevitable, with Italy currently positioned to host a meet on May 28.
