Night we all said thank you to our NHS heroes

AND YOUNG ROYALS LED APPLAUSE

- By Alex Ward

MILLIONS of Britons paid a heartfelt tribute last night to NHS staff who are placing their own lives on the line.

Across the country, they stood at doors and in gardens or leaned out of windows to applaud and whoop their support.

Among those leading the way were Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak – and Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

The Prime Minister and Chancellor stood outside No10 to take part in the ‘clap for our carers’ at 8pm.

Landmarks across Britain were turned blue for the event, including Glasgow’s SSE Hydro, Lincoln Cathedral, and the Blackpool Tower.

Kensington Palace posted a video featuring George, six, Charlotte, nearly five, and Louis, nearly two, all clapping their thanks earlier in the day at Anmer Hall.

Clarence House said Prince Charles – who was diagnosed with coronavirus on Tuesday – and his wife Camilla applauded from separate parts of their Royal Deeside home at Birkhall, as both are in self-isolation.

In the Ralston area of Paisley the sound of clapping was joined by a bang of support as someone used fireworks to emphasise their appreciation for NHS staff.

In the Fife village of North Queensferry, applause rang out from windows and doorways, while people also banged pots and pans and sounded car horns.

Local resident Jacqui Low said: ‘I could not be prouder or more emotional. There is hope. I hope all NHS staff know we are right behind them.’

Residents in the Dennistoun area of Glasgow leaned out of tenements, shouting ‘thank you NHS’ and ‘we love the NHS’.

Others banged their hands against window frames.
