Stop whining, be grateful

-

The outcome of this pandemic is unknowable, but one thing is certain: humankind will have learned a big lesson about the priorities of life.

In this country we have so much to be thankful for. A free NHS, generous social security payments, well-paid jobs, money to spend on luxury holidays and homes, and an excellent education system.

Regrettably, this did not stop us becoming a nation of whiners always wanting more.

We complained about such petty things: the Prime Minister did not visit the flood zones quickly enough. The NHS is free, but we have to pay to park at hospitals. Well-paid workers went on strike, holding the public to ransom. There were demonstrations against democracy.

The current hardships will be difficult to bear, but everything comes to an end and when it does we should be more grateful.

All in it together

The news Prince Charles has coronavirus shows we are all in this together: young, old, rich, poor, royalty or beggar.

The virus does not discriminate. The fact that not even our future monarch is protected from this deadly disease should concentrate the minds of those reckless people who, incredibly, have still to heed the Government’s instructions about social distancing.

AN elderly man discovers he is infected with the coronavirus while in Scotland. Most normal human beings, Scots or otherwise, would, I am certain, feel empathy.

Not some Nationalists. George Kerevan of the SNP made remarks about Prince Charles that were offensive and entirely uncalled for.

I am no royalist, however, George Kerevan may well make me one.

Saved by Sainsbury’s

IN regards to your article about lack of slots for online shopping, I would like to say thank you to Sainsbury’s for their wonderful service.

Like many, I couldn’t find an available slot but on Sunday I received an email from Sainsbury’s to say they identified me as being in the over-70s group and slots would be available on Monday.

I logged in as requested and my name appeared on the screen, I chose a slot, placed an order and it was delivered next day. Fantastic service. MARGARET DUFF, Irvine, Ayrshire.

Jeremy’s no gentleman

CORONAVIRUS has been a test no Government expected. I’m just thankful we have a Conservative Government in charge. I am 80 and fortunate enough to have the health and fitness and insight to know how to plan for remaining at home.

What a pity Jeremy Corbyn has not taken the opportunity to assure Boris Johnson of his support in a positive manner.

A gentleman and a scholar? Sadly, no.

Reckless rovers

HOW dare holidaymakers who travelled abroad in the last two weeks complain about how the Government has ‘a duty of care’ to bring them back.

They obviously didn’t have a duty of care for themselves. Are we meant to pick up the cost of their stupidity? SUZANNE FOSTER, Ballindalloch,

UK ruined by PC

IT’S clear from readers’ letters and the actions we see happening in the world today that political correctness has done very little for the way people act.

All it has done is breed a lack of respect, selfishness, no common sense, and most importantly, no fear of discipline. What happened to the sense of community and responsibility the nation once had?

DAVID ALLAN, Tillicoultry, Stirlingshire.

OAPs high and dry

IT would be helpful if the Scottish Government would suspend purchase of drink rules and treat us like the rest of the UK.

It’s thoughtful to allow pensioners an hour for shopping in the mornings.

however, we in Scotland can’t add
