Jackie’s Top Ten hits for a trip to the 80s
TINSELTOWN IN THE RAIN – THE BLUE NILE. Sublime. Do I love you? Yes I love you. This song catapults me back to my youth like no other and still moves me today.
WHOLE OF THE MOON – THE WATERBOYS. The lyrics are just poetry. It’s like it was written yesterday and is my running go-to when I’m flagging.
MARY’S PRAYER – DANNY WILSON. Gary Clark could sing the Ts & Cs of a car loan and make me melt.
VIOLENTLY – HUE AND CRY. In the 80s I’d follow Pat and Greg’s concerts around the UK. Until the restraining order...
OBLIVIOUS – AZTEC CAMERA. Roddy Frame has written so many great pop songs. We tried for decades to get him to appear on Hogmanay without success.
HALLELUIAH MAN – LOVE AND MONEY. I only reacquainted myself with this band for the documentary. Their music is so well-produced and who needs Tony Hadley? James Grant had one of the best voices of the eighties.
KISS THIS THING GOODBYE – DEL AMITRI. Justin Currie doesn’t just write great songs, he writes stories that stay with you with beginnings, middles and twists at the end.
LOVE SONG – SIMPLE MINDS. Memories of dancing at Maestros with my arty pal Senga and pleading with the DJ to put this on.
SNAKES AND LADDERS – TV 21. A Scottish band that didn’t get the recognition they deserved. I still have their album and love this song.
DIGNITY – DEACON BLUE. Such an enduring song from a magnificent album. My judgment is also coloured by the fact that despite their success, the band members are some of the nicest people in the music business.
