DEBORAH Hubbard yesterday urged readers of her favourite newspaper to take part in its jackpot game – or risk losing out.

The pensioner has become the first Daily Mail reader to win this paper’s Golden Cash Wallet top prize of £25,000.

She told other readers to have a go because there was absolutely nothing to lose.

A delighted Mrs Hubbard, 63, who lives with husband David, 68, in Harwich, Essex, said: ‘We still can’t believe it, really. We don’t usually do these things, but we thought we’d give it a go and it was just really lovely. It’s still sinking in, if I’m honest.

‘We’re going to treat the family

after the experience everyone’s had over the last few months. We’ve got nine grandchildren and five children so it’ll be a relief. And of course, we’ll save a little bit for ourselves.

‘Previously, we’ve just thrown prize cards away, but we’re so lucky we didn’t do it this time! It just came at the right time as well.

‘I fully expected that when I phoned, the lady would say I’ve made a mistake. I’d tell others to just have a go – there’s absolutely nothing to lose.’

The game, which started last Saturday and will run for the next three weeks, sees four golden numbers printed inside the paper every day.

Readers must circle the corresponding numbers on their game card, which is found in Saturday’s edition. If they mark off every number in any of the four prize columns by Friday that week, they win between £1,000 and £25,000.

Mary Marsden, of Sheffield, pocketed £10,000 after completing her game card within three days. The RAF veteran, 97, said: ‘I’ve bought the Daily Mail since 1948 and I’ve never won anything. I was just overwhelmed, and absolutely speechless.

‘It’s just sheer luck. I’d urge other readers to take a chance.’

A total prize fund of £1million is up for grabs, which includes special Golden Cash tickets which can be redeemed for instant prizes from £10 to £5,000. Michael and Rita Carter, of Chelmsford, Essex, were stunned when she opened their paper and found a golden cash ticket to win the maximum instant prize of £5,000. Having bought the Mail for more than 20 years before lockdown, Saturday’s edition was the first print newspaper they had bought since the end of March – and it proved a lucky charm.

Mr Carter, 76, a former factory manager, said: ‘It was a complete surprise, quite a shock.

‘I’ve been a regular reader for years but it was the first paper I’ve bought since lockdown.

‘It’s just a very nice surprise. We are going to wait to decide how to spend it, maybe go on a holiday once we can.

‘You sometimes think, “does anyone ever win these things?” and then we went and did it.

‘We’ve had lots of phone calls congratulating us, but we can’t even buy them a drink until lockdown is over.’
