PM CRASH DRAMA
Security car rear-ends Johnson Jag as protester leaps out in front of it
A PROTESTER leapt in front of a car carrying Boris Johnson yesterday, causing a protection vehicle to crash into it.
The dramatic security blunder was captured on camera as the Prime Minister was being driven from the Commons in a convoy.
A man protesting about Turkish action against Kurdish rebels ran into the road outside the gates to Parliament, causing Mr Johnson’s driver to brake sharply.
A Range Rover which was following closely behind, carrying a security team, rammed into the back of the £54,000 Jaguar XJ, leaving a large dent in the boot.
The convoy quickly drove off to Downing Street. No one was hurt in the crash. The protester, who was quickly tackled by police and arrested, was later identified as Kurdish refugee Diyari Kurdi, 58.
Scotland Yard confirmed that the incident at 2.30pm was not terror related, but it will raise fresh security concerns about the safety of MPs leaving Parliament.
It happened yards from the spot where jihadist Khalid Masood crashed in March 2017 after mowing down pedestrians on Westminster
Bridge. He then forced his way through the Carriage Gates and stabbed PC Keith Palmer to death before being shot dead.
Yesterday, Mr Johnson had just met Tory MPs following Prime
Minister’s Questions in the Commons. The protester managed to dodge an unarmed police officer and get within a few feet of Mr Johnson’s car.
A No10 source said: ‘I think the video speaks for itself as to what happened.’ The Metropolitan Police said: ‘A man was arrested at the scene for offences under Section 5 of the Public Order Act and for obstructing the highway.’
