Kate Garraway: My husband can open his eyes again after 3 months in coma
The husband of TV host Kate Garraway has begun to show signs of recovery after three months in a coma.
Former new labour spin doctor Derek Draper was struck down by coronavirus in March. the 52-year-old was taken into intensive care and placed in an induced coma.
Good Morning Britain presenter Miss Garraway, 53, has revealed that he has now opened his eyes but still faces a long battle to recover further.
she told hello! magazine how she and their children, Darcey, 14, and Billy, ten, are ‘keeping positive and doing everything we can to bring him round’.
she said: ‘the children and i communicate with him every day on Facetime, while a nurse holds his ipad.
‘i really believe he can hear. When medical staff say: “Good morning, Derek,” he sometimes opens his eyes.’
Miss Garraway is preparing to return to her ITV show and her regular presenting slot on smooth radio.
she was told six times by doctors that Mr
Draper might die and last month revealed that Covid-19 has left her husband with a hole in his heart, diabetes and needing of kidney dialysis.
it could take years for him to get well and she has been advised to return to work and get back to a routine as best she can.
‘i must create structure and normality for the children,’ she said. ‘Billy starts secondary school in september, but Derek’s doctors say he won’t be out of hospital by then.
‘My priority is to make the children feel safe, not to let them see me feeling vulnerable in the world where Derek was my rock.’
