Sensational claims of violence, drug binges and bizarre bedroom pranks – as Johnny Depp circus lands in UK High Court...

- By Sam Greenhill Chief Reporter

JOHNNY Depp cowered in a bathroom to escape his ‘narcissistic sociopath’ young wife’s violent rages, he told London’s High Court yesterday.

The Hollywood actor swore on oath he was not a wife beater as he claimed ex-wife Amber Heard was the real ‘abuser’ – as she watched his testimony from the public gallery.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean star said she punched him, severed his fingertip by hurling a vodka bottle at him and mocked him when he ran away by saying: ‘You are such a baby.’

In a day of extraordinary mud-slinging, Depp, 57, claimed the final straw was when his actress wife defecated in their bed. But Miss Heard, 34, will tell the court that Depp is a violent drunk ‘monster’ who waged a campaign of terror against her.

Yesterday she wore a red bandanna over her face as she arrived at the Royal Courts of Justice flanked by her girlfriend Bianca Butti, 38, whom she has been dating since last year, her sister Whitney and lawyer Jennifer Robinson.

Depp wore a blue bandanna as he stepped from a people carrier on to The Strand and was patted down as he went through security at court.

As the three-week showdown got under way with Depp as the first witness, he:

Called claims he hit his wife ‘sick and untrue’, citing his moral code as a Kentucky-born ‘Southern gentleman’.

Branded Miss Heard a ‘calculating, narcissistic sociopath’ who had married him to further her career.

Admitted his legendary drug and alcohol benders had caused a ‘lot of pain’.

Said he took ‘every drug known to man’ from age 11 to ‘numb’ the pain of his childhood.

Alleged Miss Heard had ‘two extra-marital affairs’ including with billionaire Elon Musk.

Depp is suing The Sun newspaper for a 2018 article calling him a ‘wife beater’, which is defending the claim by saying: ‘The description is entirely accurate and truthful.’

Depp told the court it was ‘inconceivable’ he would hit a woman, citing his Southern upbringing and saying he considers chivalry ‘very important’. He said: ‘It is a strong and central part of my moral code that I would never strike a woman, under any circumstances, at any time. I find it simply inconceivable.’

His defence reeled off a string of incidents in which Miss Heard allegedly attacked him throughout their marriage.

Depp also cited an incident in which she ‘repeatedly’ punched him in the face on a private jet in 2014 and claimed that she punched him again as he fled to the toilet.

His lawyer David Sherborne said: ‘He is not and never has been a wife-beater. He says it was Ms Heard who was the one who started physical fights, who punched or hit him. She was the abuser, not him.

‘She is a complex and aggressive individual who suffered extreme mood swings, would provoke endless circular arguments, and fly into violent rages.’

He said when Miss Heard told her husband ‘I don’t think I can make you happy’, the £400million star had replied: ‘I have also surmised that – from the last five or six sucker punches to my face and head – that you aren’t all that happy.’

Mr Sherborne said that Miss Heard’s claims of violence could scarcely be more serious, including ‘being dragged across the floor by her hair, having her lip punched so hard it splattered blood on the wall, a broken or busted nose and so on’ – but he claimed she had invented them.

The lawyer said some of her claims of abuse were before they got married. He said: ‘Despite his alleged violence right from the outset, she happily chose to move in with him, to get engaged to him and then to get married to him.’

Mr Sherborne told the court Miss Heard seemed to ‘thrive off arguments. She is annoyed when Mr Depp responds to her physicality by “running away” or escaping to another room – and often a bathroom where he can lock himself away’.

When he complained about the physical abuse he suffered, said his lawyer, his wife would berate him: ‘You’re a ******* baby... You are such a baby. Grow the **** up.’

Miss Heard has claimed Depp threw a phone in her face, causing bruising, on May 21, 2016. But Depp’s barrister said that the next day, a photo ‘shows a smiling and flawless looking Miss Heard, devoid of any such facial injuries’.

Yet by May 27, he said, Miss Heard had attended the Los Angeles Courthouse to seek a restraining order against Depp, ‘very publicly sporting what appears to be the facial injuries which she claims she suffered during the incident’.

Sasha Wass QC, for The Sun, said it had witness testimony, medical evidence, photos, video, digital evidence and Depp’s own texts that showed he beat Miss Heard and caused her to fear for her life.

‘The defendants will suggest that either Mr Depp is a pathological liar or his excessive alcohol and drug abuse have detached him from any insight into his own conduct,’ she said. ‘Either way, what he did to Amber Heard was to beat her.’

The case continues.
