Boy playing on building site dies after falling into trench

Family of tragic Shea, 10, ask: Where was security guard?

- By Sam Walker

A ten-year-old boy has died following a tragic accident on a building site near his home.

Shea Ryan was found on the empty site in the centre of a housing estate in the Drumchapel area of Glasgow just before 10pm on thursday.

It is thought that the boy fell down a hidden trench.

Paramedics, police and firefighters attended the scene and he was taken to Queen elizabeth University Hospital where he died a short time later.

His death is not being treated as suspicious. the Health and Safety executive is working with police to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

His name was confirmed by his grandparents, Janis Meechan and William Brown, who told BBC Scotland that Shea was a ‘good boy’. they were among those who laid floral tributes at the site yesterday.

‘We think our wee granddaughter was there when he fell,’ Miss Meechan said.

‘We’ve just came up to put these flowers down. He was a good boy. Wild, but good’.

When Shea’s grandfather found out what had happened he said: ‘I thought I was hearing things.’

Miss Meechan added: ‘Somebody should have been security guarding in there.’

Shea’s cousin Shantelle Conaghan yesterday described him as ‘beautiful and caring’.

In a Facebook post she wrote: ‘Can’t believe it, absolutely devastated, never in my life did I think that my beautiful, kind, caring wee cousin would be sent to heaven at this age. ‘I’ll love you forever wee guy.’ neighbours told how they heard a group of young boys screaming for help in the street shortly before 10pm.

It is believed Shea fell down a trench, thought to be part of an unfinished drain.

It was also reported that his mother had arrived at the scene as paramedics attempted to treat the boy at the scene.

Residents turned out in droves throughout the day yesterday, laying flowers, football memorabilia and attaching signs to the safety fence bearing messages including ‘only one Shea Ryan’.

Plastic games consoles, cards and other items were also left in tribute to the youngster.

One note attached to a bouquet of flowers read ‘rest easy little man’.

Yesterday afternoon, a group of friends arrived with a mounted speaker and played tina turner’s hit single the Best on repeat as they hugged and cried at the scene.

Uniformed police officers were still on patrol at the construction site, which remained cordoned off last night.

It is believed that work had been ongoing in the area as part of a £5million drainage project to help combat flooding.

engineers are also planning to realign Garscadden Burn. A tribute to Shea posted on the community Facebook page Drumchapel Sunday read: ‘Drumchapel has lost one of its own, not only touching the hearts of our home of Drumchapel but afar.

‘not many will sleep much thinking all the questions that will need answers and how the poor family and friends are coping with this devastating blow.’

the boy’s devastated parents were unavailable for comment last night.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: ‘Around 9.55pm on thursday, police were called to a report of a boy seriously injured at a works site near Glenkirk Drive, Drumchapel, Glasgow.

‘emergency services attended, and the ten-year-old was taken by ambulance to the Queen elizabeth University Hospital, where he died a short time later.’

Last night, A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘Operations control mobilised two fire appliances and two water rescue units where firefighters assisted their emergency service colleagues.’
