Should public sector workers get a pay rise?

-

AS A headteacher, I don’t believe it is perverse to give teachers and teaching assistants a reasonable pay rise (Letters). Despite the risks to their health, they have been looking after the children of key workers. They have been setting work through distance learning, marking and keeping in daily contact with pupils. Schools have also been supporting families where there have been tensions and mental well-being issues. I am proud of what the staff at my school achieved looking after the children in their care, despite the risks and challenges.

MARK BILTCLIFFE, Buckley, Flintshire. WELL said, Andrew Pierce: teachers don’t deserve a pay rise after shirking their duties during the lockdown (Mail). Why stop there? Doctors and dentists closed their surgeries while police chiefs allowed mobs to run riot. Why does the Government believe that they should be paid inflation-busting pay increases? The people who deserve more pay are care workers and refuse collectors, who worked through the pandemic.

CALVIN TOWN, Exeter, Devon.

VITAL workers, such as carers and shop assistants, should be considered for a pay rise. Unpalatable though it may seem, the majority of the NHS and police did little during the lockdown. No operations, no GP consultations, reduced crime and traffic. Let’s give our real heroes the reward they deserve.

Dr PETER HILTON, Haverfordwest, Pembs.

NURSES and carers who risked their lives, with some dying, have been shamefully ignored by the Government for a pay rise. Boris clapped and now he’s slapped.
