Peterborough tell Celtic to up £4m Toney offer
CELTIC have made their first move to land in-demand Peterborough striker Ivan Toney.
Director of football Barry Fry told Sportsmail last night that a Parkhead bid, believed to be in the region of £4million, arrived for the 24-year-old on Friday.
Holding out for a package with add-ons worth £10m, however, Fry turned it down and warned the Scottish champions they have to
up the ante to edge out frontrunners Brentford. Greek international goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas, meanwhile, is set to undergo a medical and complete a £5m switch from AEK Athens after touching down in Glasgow last night. Celtic are also in the market for a striker, with West Ham’s Albian Ajeti swithering over a one-year loan move, which would include an option to buy. And Parkhead sources insist the Swiss forward is just one of the names on a list also featuring Posh striker Toney. ‘We received a bid for Ivan from Celtic on Friday and we turned them down flat,’ Fry told Sportsmail. ‘What’s it going to take to get him? It will take a lot more than Celtic offered. It’s their first bid, so I don’t know, they might come back.’ Owner Darragh MacAnthony revealed on Twitter: ‘Look, we have multiple bids for him from Prem/Champ and one from Scotland. As expected.’ Fry admits Toney is keen on a switch to Glasgow, but won’t let him go for less than their valuation after missing out on promotion to the Championship. Brentford have already had a bid accepted and remain favourites while Celtic decide whether to return to the table. ‘I know Celtic are after another striker down here as well,’ added Fry. ‘But if we keep Toney and get to the Championship that’s worth £12.5m to us. I’ve told the lad that.’ Celtic, meanwhile, have dismissed reports in Germany of an offer for Union Berlin striker Sebastian Andersson.
