Singer is criticised by fans for using 62nd birthday party to promote drugs
SHE has always been eager to shock and never shies away from courting controversy.
So perhaps it should be no surprise that Madonna celebrated her 62nd birthday by being photographed with a joint in her mouth while carrying a tray piled with marijuana.
She posed as she partied in Jamaica with her 26-year-old dancer boyfriend and her children. The singer was immediately criticised for glamorising drugs when she shared the image to her 15.4million followers on Instagram.
She captioned the post ‘Welcome to Jamaica...#birthday #leo’ in reference to her star sign.
But fans expressed their disappointment as they criticised her for promoting drug-taking. One person wrote ‘you should be jailed’ while another asked: ‘Are you advertising drugs?’ A third commented: ‘Madonna, you have lots of influence... why must you promote drugs? It is absolutely destructive. Sorry to see that... at your age you should know better.’
Others were concerned about the potential spread of Covid-19 with partygoers failing to social distance in the pictures and videos from her party. Possessing cannabis for personal use is legal in Jamaica, where it is associated with the Rastafarian religion.
The drug remains illegal in two places where Madonna has homes, London and New York, while it has been decriminalised in two others, California and Lisbon.
During her birthday celebrations,
Madonna was seen hugging her 23-year-old daughter Lourdes.
Another picture showed the singer with her boyfriend Ahlamalik Williams, who is seen rolling what appears to be a joint. Also at the party in Montego Bay were Madonna’s adopted children David Banda, 14, Mercy, 14, and sevenyear-old twins Stella and Estere.
Madonna’s latest post comes after she stoked controversy with her comments on Covid-19. In March, saying she’d had the virus, she described it as the ‘great equaliser’. Last month she shared a post containing the conspiracy theory that a corona vaccine already exists but is being kept secret.
