APPRECIATE THE ‘BRUTIFUL’

THIS is a term that was coined by Glennon for the mix of beautiful and brutal. Learn that good can come out of the unpleasant, and tough times can teach us valuable lessons.

FIND YOUR TOUCH TREE

HAVE one metaphorical place — ‘a touch tree’ — to return to when you feel emotionally lost, and make that touch tree yourself, rather than an institution or relationship or goal. ‘Every single time I have been lost, it is because I have made something other than myself my touch tree,’ says Glennon.

UNTAME YOURSELF

IN OTHER words, forget everything you’re taught, and examine societal beliefs you’ve been blindly swallowing. Ask yourself what it means to be a successful human being.

STOP ASKING OTHERS’ OPINIONS

‘WE’RE constantly looking outside ourselves for answers, but that is exactly like asking people for directions to places they’ve never been,’ says Glennon.

CUT THE FALSE MODESTY

‘EVERY time you pretend to be less than you are, you steal permission from other women to exist fully,’ says Glennon. ‘Don’t mistake modesty for humility. Modesty is a giggly lie. An act. A mask. A fake game. We have no time for it.’

BE BORED

THINKING, Glennon writes, is ‘something folks did before Google’ and leads to self-discovery. ‘The moment after we don’t know what to do with ourselves is the moment we find ourselves. Right after itchy boredom is self-discovery. But we have to hang in there long enough without bailing.’
