I fudged it when I did DIY hair colour

-

DURING lockdown, gone was the luxury of shampoo and sets, trims, colours and perms at my local hair salon. It was a case of DIY. I gathered all the equipment — towels, comb, mirror, and old curlers of every size and colour. Standing in the shower with just my top removed, all I managed to soak was my trousers. After shoving in 16 of the appropriate size curlers, I was ready for the hairdryer. The result? Not too bad, but a horrible fudge colour. Back to the computer to order a wash-in, wash-out light brown dye. Sensibly I did a test — it came out mahogany! Next, I tried natural ingredients. I put four Yorkshire tea bags in a pint of boiling water and, when it cooled, poured it over my head. When I came up for air, my hair had a yellow tinge. The next week, I tried 1 tbsp Gold Blend coffee and this time, to my surprise, I liked it.

A nice warm fudge colour. By now, not only was the white coming through, but my hair was getting very long. While talking to a WI friend on the phone, she said her carer had arrived to cut her hair. I jokingly suggested she send her round to me, and it was arranged there and then. Then I remembered I had met this carer — she had pink and green hair and a nose stud, and she was coming to cut my hair! I needn’t have worried. She gave me a good trim and set. What was extraordinary was that she managed to put in 36 curlers. Telling my friend this saga, she suggested I set up a business and call it Teasy Weasy Sure To Pleasy. No need — I have an appointment booked with my real hairdresser.
