FIVE THINGS WE LEARNED FROM THE SPFL THIS WEEKEND

- CALUM McCLURKIN

FRIMPONG SPARKS CELTIC INTO LIFE

A PERFORMANCE that won’t live long in the memory of Celtic fans but the introduction of Jeremie Frimpong injected some urgency into Neil Lennon’s side. The direct wing-back used his lightning pace to set up the killer second goal and helped create the third after coming on at the hour-mark of Celtic’s 3-0 win over Motherwell.

COMMANDING JACK PILES ON THE PRESSURE

WHEN any team has 70 per cent possession or more, it’s usually an indicator that the deep-lying midfielder is doing his job. Rangers were dominant in their 2-0 win at Hamilton and Ryan Jack set the tone in midfield. He kept possession expertly and ensured the visitors were constantly on the front foot in Lanarkshire.

DEVLIN DELIVERS AN ALL-ACTION DISPLAY

GARY HOLT urged his Livingston side to show more fighting spirit and they responded in a gutsy 1-0 win over Ross County. Nobody epitomised those battling qualities more than Nicky Devlin. The rightback (pictured) charged up and down his wing, delivering dangerous crosses and defending with authority when required.

CLASSY KILLIE SAILING IN CALMER WATERS

A RESOUNDING 4-0 win over Dundee United handed Kilmarnock their first victory of the season. Filling the void at left-back since Greg Taylor’s departure has been tricky but Calum Waters put in a fine display. His pinpoint cross for Nicke Kabamba’s opener settled the Ayrshire side, who improved as the game went on.

THE McNAMARA AND CONWAY DREAM TEAM

THE creativity of Craig Conway and the energy provided by full-back Danny McNamara helped St Johnstone edge out St Mirren 1-0 in Perth. The guile of experienced winger Conway troubled the Buddies’ backline and the relentless overlapping from McNamara added to the danger. Saints have a really strong right flank.
