Stop exploiting fear

-

NICOLA Sturgeon gravely reports on the high number of positive coronavirus cases, barely acknowledging the obvious link to the much greater number of tests being carried out.

Since the Scottish Government had neither the will nor the inclination to roll out mass testing early in the pandemic, they have no way of knowing how the latest figures compare.

Since the advice remains the same, self-isolate if you think you are displaying symptoms, the actual number of people infected may be higher. And that is not even considering those who may be asymptomatic. For all that, our society has not yet completely broken down.

rather than continuing to use fear to try and keep us in our place, perhaps she should take accountability for the greatest tragedy to come out of the pandemic – preventable care home deaths. CRAIG ELLIOT, Bridgend,

West Lothian.

I See that nicola Sturgeon considers suppression of Covid-19 has been

successful. Yet there has been a huge rise in deaths from other causes. Alzheimer’s deaths up by nearly a quarter. Diabetes up by a third. Suicides have risen to an alarming extent.

Then there are thousands of people who have been denied cancer treatment, or were too frightened to go to doctors or hospitals, for fear of catching coronavirus.

Isn’t it time we faced the reality that, from every point of view, lockdown has been an unmitigated disaster? There is no evidence whatsoever to suggest it prevented one Covid-related death. ALASDAIR G FOx, Murthly, Perthshire. I AM alarmed that the First Minister seems to be advising the public to challenge anyone they perceive to be ‘not obeying orders’.

As someone who has been verbally abused for not wearing a mask when I am exempt due to a medical condition, this strikes me as anarchy.

I am 77 years old and the man who verbally abused me was around 45. The last I saw of him was when I confronted him and he scurried away.

There is going to be a real uprising against this order – the SNP’s followers are zealous enough already.
