COMING TO A PLATE NEAR YOU!

Whether you like them or not...

- By Sam Walker

LOVE them or loathe them, the sight of Brussels sprouts on the Christmas dinner table always brings out strong opinions.

So spare a thought for these farm workers who will harvest thousands of tons of the contentious little vegetables – whether they’re fans or not.

A team of 225 will spend next month harvesting and sorting 5,000 tons of sprouts a day. They will be working 12-hour shifts, night and day, covering more than 500 acres of farmland at East Lothian Produce, in Dunbar.

The business, which supplies major supermarkets, has been run by the same family for 50 years and sees its workforce grow by more than a third during the festive period.

And despite the Covid pandemic causing problems with production this year, director of the firm Chris Logan said it has been business as usual.

He said: ‘There’s no doubt sprouts are an acquired taste but we harvest 60,000 tons every year – so someone must like them.’

Asked if he himself is a fan, Mr Logan said: ‘Sprouts are great with a roast dinner – but people often make the mistake of overcooking them.’
