Fearne: Holding in my emotions gave me vocal cyst

- By Emma Powell Showbusiness Correspondent

FEARNE Cotton has claimed that she suffered a cyst on her vocal chords because she had failed to be honest about her emotions.

The Radio 2 presenter and podcast host, 39, revealed she has written a book on the impact that suppressing feelings can have on physical health.

‘I can see how detrimental it is on a physical basis when you suppress emotions,’ she said.

‘I say that from personal experience. I wrote a book called Speak Your Truth because at the start of this year I had a sizeable cyst on my vocal chords. As soon as I was diagnosed with it I thought, “I know what that is. I know that’s because I’m not being honest”.’

Miss Cotton has been open about her mental health battles in the past, releasing several wellbeing books as well as running the Happy Place podcast in which she talks to celebrities about their struggles.

The former Top Of The Pops host said she is conscious about how to help her children Rex, seven, and Honey, five, open up about their feelings and fears.

‘I want them to grow up having really polite boundaries. To hold their own in a conversation and say, “That doesn’t align with what I believe”... and that’s something I still to this day as a grown woman struggle with greatly.’

Miss Cotton, who was speaking on an online Q&A on ‘navigating feelings with your child’ has been vocal about her mental health struggles during lockdown, hailing exercise as a ‘comfort and necessity’.
