Turkey jails hundreds of coup plotters

MORE than 330 former fighter pilots, army chiefs and other suspects were jailed for life yesterday for trying to overthrow Turkey’s government.

The 337 were among almost 500 defendants accused of taking part in the failed 24hour coup in 2016, in which parliament was bombed.

Before it was crushed, 251 people died.

Those handed life sentences were found guilty of crimes including murder and trying to assassinate President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. A crackdown following the coup has seen the media muzzled and thousands arrested.
