has faced a fu­ri­ous global back­lash over a so­cial me­dia ad that ‘in­sults’ the post-war Baby Boomer gen­er­a­tion who are its core cus­tomers.

The @BMW Twit­ter ac­count for its new £85,000 flag­ship iX elec­tric SUV, left with BMW CEO Oliver Zipse, chal­lenges read­ers: ‘OK, Boomer. And what’s your rea­son not to change?’ But Richard Auck­ock, chair­man of Bri­tain’s Guild of Mo­tor­ing Writ­ers, posted: ‘Do you al­ways talk to your cus­tomers like this? Out­ra­geous.’

BMW has apol­o­gised.
