GREGOR HAS TO BE KEPT ON HIS TOES

-

SRU chief executive Mark Dodson is set to offer Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend a contract extension which he expects him to sign within the next few weeks. Townsend deserves it, too, as his team have greatly improved since crashing out of the group stages of last year’s World Cup in Japan. But there are suggestions his new deal will take him up to the end of the next World Cup, which takes place in France in 2023. Handing out such a long-term contract in international management only usually happens when the man in charge has been a fantastic success. No-one could really say that’s been the case since Townsend took over in 2017. There is potential in the side he has put together, but how often have we have had the promise of jam tomorrow? A rolling one-year contact would be a better option to keep him on his toes rather than a new two-and-a-half year deal.
