Don’t deny grans precious cuddles

- PATRICIA THOMLINSON, Carlisle.

SCROOGE has reappeared: Bah humbug! Vaccines are just around the corner and deaths from Covid are dropping. After nine months of lockdown and restrictions, we are still being told we must not hug granny at Christmas because we may be the cause of her death in January. What a terrible thing to say, so coldhearted and with no understanding of what so many elderly people have endured this year. If granny dies next year through natural causes and nothing to do with the virus, her family will always remember they never got to hug her for her last Christmas. Scientists and the people in power have no idea how ordinary people have suffered for so long in isolation. They need uplifting and cheering up or the loneliness and depression so many are experiencing could see them giving up the will to live. Can we not have the five days over Christmas to enjoy all the traditions? Celebrating Christmas after the diabolical year we’ve had is a must. Ask any elderly person and they will tell you quality of life always wins over quantity. ANN CRUICKSHANK, Huddersfield, W. Yorks.

FAMILIES are being told don’t hug granny. Why don’t we grandads ever get a mention?

HARVEY CHARTER, Faversham, Kent.

DON’T hug your granny at Christmas because she might catch Covid. Just open the windows and give her hypothermia instead.

ANGELA GALITZINE, Vale, Guernsey.

WHY are people complaining about restrictions placed on us because of Covid-19? Do they not remember that on the first evening after the last lockdown ended, the streets of our cities were awash with drunken revellers. With no masks or social distancing, how many went home and infected their households? We can live without pubs and nightclubs, but we can’t live without being able to see and hug our nearest and dearest at Christmas or any other time of the year. Senior citizens have stuck to the rules, but are the ones who feel let down. Don’t blame the Government for tightening the rules. It is doing its best to cope with the consequences of people who don’t seem to have any sense of responsibility.
