‘Pull back from cliff ’ plea by business leaders

- By Tom Witherow

BUSINESS leaders yesterday said they face yet more weeks of uncertainty as the Brexit negotiations continue ‘past the 11th hour’.

If a trade deal is not agreed before December 31, then Britain and the EU will move to World Trade Organization rules which would lead to tariffs on thousands of items.

Firms fear an avalanche of new red tape will stifle business and cause chaos at ports plus they have concerns there will not be time to adjust to the new rules. Adam Marshal, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce, said: ‘This is a very frustrating time for businesses as they anxiously wait f or decisions about the terms of trade with the EU come January 1.

‘If a few more hours or days makes the difference, keep going and get an agreement that delivers clarity and certainty.

‘Businesses will need time and support to adjust in a New Year like no other whatever the eventual outcome.’

Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the British Retail Consortium, said: ‘The 11th hour has passed and every passing moment of uncertainty makes it harder to prepare effectively for January 1. Without a deal, the British public will face over £3billion in food tariffs and retailers would have to pass on some of these costs to customers.

‘For the sake of customers and businesses around the UK, we need a deal.’

Tony Danker, director general of the Confederation of British Industry, said: ‘A deal is essential and possible. Government must move with even more determination to avoid the looming cliff-edge of January 1.’
