Ibrox boss pleased to see concussion subs trialled in cup games

- By MARK WILSON

STEVEN GERRARD has welcomed plans for the trial use of concussion substitutes in the Scottish Cup.

The Ibrox boss will be without Leon Balogun for today’s meeting with Motherwell after a head knock saw the centre- back replaced during the midweek League Cup defeat to St Mirren.

Gerrard says he supports any measure to improve the care of players after rule-makers IFAB approved the test use of additional permanent substitutes for concussion.

Dr Willie Stewart, the neuropathologist whose research revealed former professionals were three-and-a-half times more likely to die of dementia, has criticised the plan for not going far enough.

However, SFA chief medical consultant Dr John MacLean called it‘ an important step’ as the governing body confirmed the additional substitutes would be introduced to the Scottish Cup at ‘the earliest possible opportunity.’

Asked if he welcomed the move, Gerrard said: ‘ Very much so. As someone who sampled the MLS as a player as well, I know they are at the forefront of ( dealing with) concussion and have been pushing it for a lot longer, going into it in more detail. So I certainly welcome the trials in terms of up here in Scotland.

‘I know England are looking into doing the same things and the quicker we can move the better.

‘Because I think we have to look after the welfare of the players, certainly when it comes to head injuries as there has been a lot of talk about situations later on in life that head injuries can lead to dementia and stuff.

‘I certainly welcome developments in that area to improve the game and the welfare of the players as well.’

Balogun made way for Ianis Hagi late in Wednesday night’s 3-2 loss in Paisley following a clash of heads with St Mirren striker Jon Obika.

‘From the other night, Leon had to come off with a head issue,’ added Gerrard.

‘There’s protocols now that we have to follow. I’ve spoken to the doctor on that, so we will follow that medical guidance but he will be unavailable for tomorrow’s game.

‘We’ re hoping to have him available for the next one after the weekend.’
