1937: Born August 2 in Larkhall. 1956: Signs for Hamilton Academical from Larkhall Thistle. 1960: Leaves after 125 appearance­s to join Clyde. 1965: Moves to Dundee for £10,000, aged 27. Debut is 5-0 defeat by Dundee United — a record loss. 1968: Moves to Kilmarnock for £3,000. Ends playing career there. 1970: Retires as a player and is appointed coach at Dundee. 1971: Jerry Kerr retires as United boss and McLean, 34, takes over. 1974: After finishing ninth, seventh and eighth, United reach Scottish Cup Final but they lose 3-0 to Celtic. 1976: Avoids relegation on last day of season in new Premier Division with draw against Rangers at Ibrox. Dundee relegated instead. 1979: United win first major honour, beating Aberdeen in League Cup final replay at Dens Park. 1980: United retain League Cup, beating Dundee in final. 1981: United knock out Monaco, Borussia Monchengla­dbach and Winterslag before losing UEFA Cup quarter-final to Radnicki Nis. Lose Scottish Cup and League Cup finals, both to Rangers. 1982: Appointed as Scotland boss Jock Stein’s No2 for World Cup. 1983: Guides United to league title. Turns down Rangers job. 1984: Rejects chance to manage Newcastle. During his career, he also turns down offers from Hibs, Hearts, Motherwell, Wolves, West Ham and Toronto Blizzard. Takes United to European Cup semi-final but they lose to Roma, who later admitted French ref Michel Vautrot had taken a £50,000 bribe. United lose League Cup final to Rangers. 1985: Lose Scottish Cup final to Celtic. 1987: Leads United to UEFA Cup final but lose to IFK Gothenburg. Loses Scottish Cup final to St Mirren. 1988: Loses Scottish Cup final to Celtic. Appointed United chairman. 1991: Lose sixth and last Scottish Cup final to brother Tommy, the Motherwell manager. 1993: Last match as manager is 4-1 home defeat to Aberdeen. McLean used 138 players for United, David Narey top with 859 games. Leading scorer was Paul Sturrock with 171 goals. McLean took charge of 1,113 games and won 536. 2000: Resigns as chairman after attack on BBC reporter who asked about manager Alex Smith’s future. 2002: McLean leaves United after selling his stake to Eddie Thompson. 2011: United rename the Fair Play Stand at Tannadice the Jim McLean Fair Play Stand. 2020: McLean dies aged 83.
