Rangers host Hartley’s Cove in Scottish Cup

- By CALUM CROWE

CELTIC and Rangers have both landed home ties against lower-league opposition in the third round of this season’s William Hill Scottish Cup. Neil Lennon’s men, who are bidding to lift the trophy for a record fifth successive year, will host either Championship part-timers Arbroath or League One leaders Falkirk. Rangers, meanwhile, will face ambitious League One outfit Cove Rangers. They are managed by Paul Hartley, who won the competition as a player with Hearts in 2006 and Celtic in 2007. Hartley’s men earned their chance for a crack at the runaway Premiership leaders courtesy of their thrilling 3-2 victory away at Alloa on Saturday afternoon. Dundee have been handed a home Tayside derby against St Johnstone after James McPake’s side edged past Lowland League minnows Bonnyrigg Rose 3-2 in extra-time on Saturday night. Hamilton will host St Mirren in the only all-Premiership tie. But, with a number of games being postponed at the weekend, there could yet be a fixture pile-up in the weeks to come. Hearts, for instance, are yet to even discover their second-round opponents. Robbie Neilson’s men are set to play the winner of Camelon Juniors versus Brora Rangers. That tie, which was initially abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch on Boxing Day, has since been called off multiple times due to freezing temperatures. The winner of Camelon/Brora v Hearts tie will then progress to a home match against League Two outfit Stranraer. Hibs, winners in 2016, will travel to Dumfries to face Queen of the South. A Highland derby is on the cards, with Ross County set to host the winners of Buckie Thistle versus Inverness Caley Thistle. All ties are scheduled to be played on the weekend of January 30-31. Third-round draw: Camelon or Brora Rangers or Hearts v Stranraer, Celtic v Arbroath or Falkirk, Dumbarton or Huntly v Aberdeen, Dundee Utd v Partick Thistle or Cowdenbeath, Dundee v St Johnstone, East Fife v Morton or Dunfermline, Elgin City or Ayr Utd v Keith or Clyde, Forfar v Edinburgh City, Formartine Utd or Annan v Motherwell, Fraserburgh v Nairn County or Montrose, Hamilton v St Mirren, Livingston v Stirling Albion or Raith Rovers, Peterhead or Stenhousemuir v Kilmarnock, Queen of the South v Hibernian, Rangers v Cove Rangers, Ross County v Buckie Thistle or Inverness CT.
