HOLT SAYS SEASON MUST BE EXTENDED IF REQUIRED

- By BRIAN MARJORIBANKS

NEW Falkirk sporting director Gary Holt has insisted League One must be played to a finish even if it means extending the season.

The Bairns were angered by the SFA and SPFL’s decision last Monday to postpone all football below the Championship until February at the earliest due to rising cases of Covid.

When the 42 league clubs voted last April to curtail the season early, Falkirk sat one point behind League One leaders Raith Rovers.

Under the points-per-game formula, the Bairns missed out on promotion to the Championship by just 0.36 of a point. And Holt is adamant that the current shortened 27-game season must be played to a conclusion. He said: ‘We should all be trying to get the leagues finished — however long that takes. We are 11 games into the season with 16 to go.

‘I don’t see any problem getting the league finished whenever we can. ‘Will we be back playing next month? Who knows? I want to play football, we can facilitate that and the league can put things in place to do that. ‘But it’s not down to us. I want us to be able to have more of a say. How it’s been done hasn’t been helpful.’

Holt resigned as Livingston manager in November after 27 largely successful months but insists that quitting was not a tough decision.

Despite refusing to close the door on a return to management one day, he has no designs on taking over at the Bairns from current co-managers Lee Miller and David McCracken.

Instead, he hopes he can see the club promoted back to the Premiership for the first time since 2010.

He said: ‘It wasn’t that big a decision (leaving Livingston). I knew it had run its course.

‘Within myself, I wasn’t happy with the way I wanted it and I didn’t want to be bitter or have a fall-out two months down the line.

‘Now my focus is to change the mindset around the Falkirk area. Not the fans, because they buy into the fact this should be a Premiership club.

‘But everyone needs to buy into it because if people keep thinking we are a League One club, we will stay a League One club. ‘My main aim is to get Falkirk back to the top level as quickly as we can.’
