Are there far too many celebrity TV shows?

-

I UNDERSTAND that the pandemic has caused TV companies to postpone or abandon many new dramas and documentaries, but why substitute them with cheap game shows featuring a host of so-called celebrities? On Saturday, the BBC had three, one after the other: Celebrity Mastermind, Catchpoint Celebrity Special and the most aptly named, Pointless Celebrities.

IT’S not just the BBC that has an over-reliance on celebrity shows. On prime-time at the weekend, ITV broadcast Catchphrase Celebrity Special, The Masked Singer (disguised singing celebs), The Chase Celebrity Special and (celebrities) Dancing On Ice.

CHRIS WHEATLEY, Llanelli, Carms.

THE Mail’s TV critic Christopher Stevens hit the nail on the head about the number of repeats on the BBC. Its incoming chairman Richard Sharp will need a good supply of indigestion tablets! After dire offerings over Christmas, what do we get on a Saturday evening? Yet more repeats of Mrs Brown’s Boys. As for new programmes, Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel is ruined by the host’s constant inane prattle. The BBC has lost its way when it comes to entertainment and balanced reporting — I refer to it as the Boris Bashing Channel. It’s no wonder so many viewers prefer to subscribe or pay for programmes they actually want to watch. ITV news is not as biased, but you have to endure Robert Peston’s ramblings. Now that over-75s like me no longer receive a free TV licence, the BBC needs to get a grip on the quality of its output or it will end up as a white elephant.

DAVID REEVES, Chippenham, Wilts.

HOW many more third-rate, celebrity quiz shows must we suffer? There is barely a day’s viewing without Z-rated celebs.

CHARLIE LAWN, Petts Wood, kent.

I WAS looking forward to Dancing On Ice, but the recorded audience screaming and shouting is a real turn-off. The recent series of Strictly was so much more enjoyable without it.

RICHARD WALBY, Ventnor, isle of Wight.
