Fun postie delivers a first-class service

-

HOW sad that a postman appeared to refuse to help a pensioner after she had fallen in her front garden (Mail). Just remember all the other posties who are doing their bit to help people. Our local postman, David Hart, who has a big heart, dresses up to lift our spirits and raise money for the Friends of Whitchurch hospital. I wanted to thank him for everything he does, so I delivered a letter to every home in the village — I have a newfound respect for how many miles he walks every day — asking them to write how they feel about him and to send me pictures. Everyone loves Dave, even the dogs, and I had a great response. I designed a 60-page book of appreciation from the village with photos, poems and drawings by the local children. Dave is a real credit to the Royal Mail. He always has a beaming smile, come rain or shine, and is so caring and willing to go above and beyond his job. He has been the only person some villagers have seen during the pandemic and he always has a few words to keep them going. Dave unknowingly delivered the book of appreciation to me last week. When I handed the parcel back to him, he was surprised. He said how lovely it was that so many people had taken the time to contribute and that it meant a lot to him.

NOT all postmen are heartless. A few weeks ago, my husband had a fall in the kitchen. I was unable to help him up and, as it was 7.30am, there wasn’t anyone outside in the street who I could ask for help. Then at 7.50am the postman knocked at the door to deliver a parcel. When I told him what had happened, he immediately came in and helped my husband into a chair.

I SERVED as a postman for 38 years and one winter found an 80-year-old widow face down in the snow, having slipped on her driveway. I was only too glad to help her back into her home, wrap her in a blanket and alert her neighbours. All delivery staff have a vital role to play to help the elderly and vulnerable in our communities.
