1% not enough for nurses giving 100%

- STuART WILKIE, King’s Lynn, Norfolk.

I CAN only imagine how NHS staff must feel at the offer of a 1 per cent pay rise. Is this an adequate reward for their incredible work and dedication during the pandemic, when they have put their own lives at risk? Praise and applause are all very well, but they do not pay the bills or fund a well-deserved holiday.

CLIVE BIRCHFIELD, Woodley, Berks.

I AM shocked and saddened by the paltry pay rise offered to nurses. the backbone of our NHS during the pandemic, they’re exhausted after witnessing so many deaths, often being there for patients who otherwise would have died alone. So Rishi Sunak, do the right thing, reconsider the meagre 1 per cent and give nurses a better pay rise.

JAYNE PRYKE, Southsea, Hants.

IF ALL government ministers worked just one day as nurses they would appreciate what the NHS has to deal with. then ask them if they think a 1 per cent pay rise is anything other than an insult. I am biased because my recent recovery from bypass surgery was thanks to these gentle, dedicated professionals. Let’s stop the happy-clappy gestures and instead reward nurses’ dedication by paying them properly. Getting this decision wrong is a potential election loser.

DOeS Boris Johnson not remember that the NHS saved his life?

BEVERLEY MuIR, Brecon, Powys.

I MAY be in the minority, but I really don’t think we should be awarding pay rises simply for asking people to do their jobs. the NHS is not a religion and should not be treated as such. Medical staff around the world have got on with the job during the pandemic without expecting a financial reward at the end of it.

P. ROBINSON, Milton Keynes, Bucks.

IF tHe Government hadn’t allowed pandemic profiteers to make so much money from taxpayers, it could have given every nurse £1,000 as a gesture of thanks for a year of huge effort and extremely high risk to their lives.
