A dazzling north star

Sleek, contemporary townhouse offers city living at its finest,

- discovers Paul Drury

No other place in Scotland is as dependent on a single commodity as the country’s oil capital. Just as Aberdeen boomed after the discovery of North Sea oil in the 1970s, so too has it suffered with the declining fortunes of black gold since 2014.

The fluctuating price of a barrel of Brent Crude can have residents of the Granite City gasping for breath, such is the perceived impact on the local economy.

Nowhere reflects that uncertainty more than the local housing market, which has been on a downward curve over the past seven years.

Aberdeen was the only Scottish city to record an annual drop in the average price of a house in December – down from £145,717 in 2019 to £142,631 last year.

It came as other parts of the country enjoyed healthy house price growth in the final three months of the year, fuelled by the highest housing market activity ever seen.

However, Aberdeen’s 2.1 per cent decline was not as severe as in previous years – and this will come as welcome relief to those who believe ‘slowing decline’ is a tangible sign for optimism in this second year of the pandemic.

The city has an abundance of stylish property, including this sleek townhouse within the prestigious Campus development in the Hilton area.

The owners have taken the builders’ blueprint and fashioned a unique home to their own tastes. This includes pairing a glass balustrade on the staircase with a feature wall of dark slate behind it, which creates a stunning statement in the heart of the house.

The first-floor kitchen and dining area has been opened up to create a luxury German kitchen with integral AEG appliances and finished with quartz worktops.

There is ample room for a family dining table and chairs.

The use of glass in a partition and a door leading into the lounge allows this area to feel really bright and spacious.

The smaller of the bedrooms on this level could be used as a home office. There is also a bedroom on the ground floor, while the master and another double are on the second floor.

The master bedroom has a luxurious en-suite shower room, with a wet room tray complete with seats in the shower area, LED feature lighting and a frosted glass door.

outside, the gardens are well maintained with a driveway leading to the garage, while the rear garden is fully enclosed and fully decked and comes complete with a ten-seat hot tub – a perfect place for viewing the Northern Lights.

The single garage has been fitted with laminate flooring, while a work bench to the rear offers the prospect of a household gym.

And when things eventually get back to normal, the delights of Union Street are only a short stroll away.
