We can overcome loss of boss, insists Lewis

- By JOHN GREECHAN

ABERDEEN captain Joe Lewis believes the ‘thick-skinned’ Dons can shrug off the departure of manager Derek McInnes — and salvage success from a season of woe. The veteran keeper, who said the interim coaching trio of Paul Sheerin, Barry Robson and Neil Simpson had brought ‘fresh ideas’ to training since McInnes’ departure, stresses the need to refocus immediately. Aberdeen, who go to Tannadice today, currently trail third-placed Hibs by six points. Both are vying for a place in the new UEFA Conference League next season but, as things stand, the team finishing fourth face an extra qualifying round. Lewis pointed out: ‘There’s a huge amount to play for with what third place brings you this season, in terms of Europe. ‘And I don’t think anybody needs any more motivation when it comes to trying to win the Scottish Cup. It’s a pretty condensed season, so anyone who goes on a run of form will feel they can win it.’ Several players will also feel a need to perform in order to earn new contracts, regardless of when the next permanent manager arrives at Pittodrie. ‘Whatever anyone’s motivation is, they need to find it and step up to the mark,’ said Lewis. ‘Right now, the target in the league has to be to finish in third place because of the rewards for next season.’ Reacting to the departure of McInnes, Lewis said: ’You need to be thick-skinned and get on with it. ‘When I signed for this club my career wasn’t going anywhere. Derek and Tony Docherty gave me that opportunity and I’ll always be grateful for that. ‘But I’m keen not to dwell too much on the past now as we can turn a season which has been very disappointing so far into something positive.’ Academy boss Simpson being promoted to the first team gives the players a direct link to the club’s glory years. Lewis, asked what the former Dons great had brought to the dressing room, said: ‘He knows the mentality of winning trophies. ‘He’s also one of those guys who, when he speaks, everyone listens. I think that’s important.
