COVE STILL TARGETING TOP FLIGHT

- By MARK WILSON

VISITING Ibrox tomorrow evening will be the biggest game in Cove Rangers’ history. So far, that is. With this ever-ambitious club, could there come a point in the future when facing their Glasgow namesakes is not simply a matter of the Scottish Cup draw but sharing the same division? Mitch Megginson doesn’t rule it out. The 28-year-old striker has helped Cove rise from the Highland League to second place in League one over the space of two years. He knows that is not the ceiling of what chairman Keith Moorhouse and manager Paul Hartley want to achieve. Promotion to the Championship remains an aim for the current campaign. Hartley has also expressed hope of introducing full-time players in the next year. The Balmoral Stadium outfit, situated in the south of Aberdeen, are only looking in one direction. And it isn’t behind them. While a key league fixture against Clyde on Tuesday night will influence Hartley’s team selection against Rangers, Megginson hopes they can show how far the club has already come. ‘I look at cities with two clubs in it, for example Dundee where there are two big clubs, and you could argue that Aberdeen is a bigger city,’ said Megginson. ‘It was begging out for a second team to emerge. I don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but I am sure in a few years’ time, with the way that the chairman and the board want to look at the club, they want to be at the highest level and face the best teams in the country on a weekly basis. ‘In the short term for us, it is about keeping ourselves as an established SPFL team and seeing how well we can do. ‘If you want to get to the highest level you have to be ambitious. Who knows, maybe in a few years that might be a possibility.’
