OLD FIRM TIE IS IDEAL, SAYS DEFOE

- By MARK WILSON

JERMAIN DEFOE insists Rangers will relish a Scottish Cup clash with Celtic as they push for more silverware this season. The 38-year-old striker opened the scoring in last night’s 4-0 win over Cove Rangers that set up a last-16 visit from their fierce rivals on the weekend of April 17/18. While Steven Gerrard’s men have already wrapped up the Premiership title, Defoe says that has merely whetted their appetite for further success. Asked about being drawn against Celtic, Defoe said: ‘Of course it was an incentive. That’s the game you want and we’re delighted to progress. We’re looking forward to it, the club and the fans. We’re all looking forward to it. ‘If we can get the Double then it will be brilliant. You want more medals. Every competition you play in, you want to win to get the trophy. ‘For me, it was a massive dream come true to win a league. It’s always difficult to win a title as you have to be consistent and the best team. ‘Having done that, it’s a great feeling and you want more.’ Defoe is out of contract this summer but is clear about his wish to have another season in front of fans at Ibrox once Covid restrictions are lifted. His goal against Cove was just a fifth of this season as his appearances have been restricted by increased competition and injuries. He added: ‘The forwards are scoring goals, so you just have to focus on playing football, training every day and keeping sharp — and when the season is finished decide what will happen. It’s well-documented how much I love it here and how much I enjoy playing in front of the supporters. ‘I’ve missed that so much this season and to get the chance to play in front of them again would be special. ‘It’s important to look after my body. I felt sharp although I haven’t started for such a long time but I felt fit, so you never know — I might play another five years! ‘It was my first start since December and I shanked one in the second half when I should have hit the target. ‘But I was happy with the goal I got. ‘It was important the lads who got a chance put on a good show to give the manager a selection headache.’
