Tierney knee injury could sideline him for weeks

- By ADRIAN KAJUMBA

ARSENAL fear Scotland defender Kieran Tierney will be out for a number of weeks with the knee injury he suffered against Liverpool on Saturday. With Euro 2020 just over two months away, the former Celtic player is set to undergo a scan to determine the extent of the injury. The full-back, who was star man in last week’s World Cup qualifying victory over the Faroe Islands at Hampden, was forced off just before half-time in his club’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool after hurting himself in a clash with James Milner. Now Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta faces an anxious 48-hour wait before learning the extent of Tierney’s latest knee injury. Scotland boss Steve Clarke will share his concerns over the injury-prone 23-year-old ahead of this summer’s European Championship. Arteta said of

Tierney: ‘He felt something in his knee and he was in pain.’ Tierney suffered a knee injury in January when it was initially thought he would only miss a couple of weeks but he went on to miss seven matches in all competitions. His absence will be a second major defensive setback for Arteta, with centre-back David Luiz set for an extended spell on the sidelines after undergoing minor surgery on his right knee on Sunday. With Arsenal nine points off the top four with eight games to go, the Europa League is looking increasingly like their best hope of getting into next season’s Champions League. Now they will have to find a way past Rangers’ and Leicester’s conquerors Slavia Prague without two of their key men in Tierney and Luiz. Arsenal host the Czech side on Thursday in the first leg of their quarter-final tie before the return leg takes place next week.
