A DRIVER appeared in court yesterday accused of causing the death of a two-week-old boy in a car crash.

Premature baby Ciaran Morris’s pram was hit by a BMW when it mounted the pavement after colliding with an oncoming Ford.

Police said the driver fled on foot following the Easter Sunday tragedy. A man was later detained nearby.

Yesterday, James Paul Davis, 34, appeared before a district judge and sat with his arms folded in the dock as four charges were read to him.

As well as a count of causing Ciaran’s death by dangerous driving, Davis is also accused of causing death while driving while uninsured, failing to stop at the scene of a crash and failure to report a collision.

Davis, of Walsall, spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court.

Wearing a grey T-shirt and jogging bottoms, he was flanked by two dock officers during the 20-minute hearing.

Ciaran’s parents, student Codie Holyman and McDonald’s worker Camaron Morris, both 18, did not attend.

On Monday, the grieving couple told of their devastation in a tribute to their first-born son.

They wrote in a statement: ‘Mommy’s and Daddy’s hearts will always ache, we love you more than anything.

‘We didn’t get to keep you for long but we are happy we had the chance to meet you, look after you and call you our son. Fly high angel.’

An aunt of Mr Morris, who asked not to be named, added: ‘He was four weeks premature, so he shouldn’t have even been here. This wasn’t the first time they’d taken the baby out – they’d had him out a few times. I just can’t stop crying about what has happened.’ Dozens of flowers, toys and letters have been left at the scene of the tragedy in the Brownhills area of Walsall and a crowdfunding appeal for the family has so far raised more than £18,000.

Miss Holyman is said to have suffered a broken shoulder in the incident.

Sergeant Mark Crozier, from West Midlands Police’s serious collisions unit, said his officers were supporting Ciaran’s parents.

District Judge David Murray remanded Davis in custody to appear at Wolverhampton Crown Court on May 4.
