Superman is the latest hero to say: I’m bisexual

WHEN it comes to love interests, it seems Superman and his son both have a thing for journalists.

Where Clark Kent fell for newswoman Lois Lane, their son Jonathan – the new Superman – is bisexual and in love with a male reporter.

In a new edition of the comic Superman: Son Of Kal-El, the hero will ‘mentally and physically burn out from trying to save everyone that he can’.

He will then be supported by Jay Nakamura, with whom he will become romantically involved.

It comes two months after it was announced that Batman’s sidekick Robin was bisexual. And in March Marvel unveiled the first gay Captain America.

Superman’s bisexuality was announced by DC Comics yesterday, which was National Coming Out Day, an annual awareness day to support people in opening up about their sexuality.

Writer Tom Taylor said: ‘I’ve always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes.

‘Superman’s symbol has always stood for hope, for truth and for justice. Today that symbol represents something more.

‘Today more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics.’ Artist John Timms added he was ‘incredibly honoured’ to be working on the storyline ‘tackling his complex modern life’.

DC Comics chief creative officer and publisher Jim Lee said: ‘We couldn’t be prouder to tell this important story. We talk a lot about the power of the DC Multiverse in our storytelling and this is another incredible example.

‘We can have Jon Kent exploring his identity in the comics as well as Jon Kent learning the secrets of his family [in the TV show] Superman and Lois.’

Superman: Son Of Kal-El was launched in July and the new edition featuring his sexuality is due out next month.
