1948: Born February 24 in Glasgow. 1966: Joins Dundee United and goes on to make more than 250 appearance­s. 1974: Plays in 3-0 Scottish Cup final defeat by Celtic. Sold to Dumbarton for £7,000. 1979: Rejoins Dundee United to take coaching role under manager Jim McLean. 1983: United win the Scottish Premier League for the first time. 1984: Reaches European Cup semi-final but loses to Roma. 1986: Moves to Ibrox as No 2 to Graeme Souness. Assistant to Scotland manager Alex Ferguson at the Mexico World Cup. 1991: Takes over from Souness as manager of Rangers, who clinch the title four matches later — their third successive championsh­ip. 1997: Leads Rangers to record-equalling ninth successive title. Awarded OBE. Announces he will step down as manager at end of season. 1998: Celtic end Smith’s ten-in-a-row dream and Hearts defeat Rangers in Scottish Cup final. Rejects offer from Sheffield Wednesday to become Everton manager. 2002: After a run of one win in 13 Premier League matches, and defeat to Middlesbro­ugh in the FA Cup quarter-finals, Everton axe him. 2004: Joins Manchester United as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant until the end of the season. Takes charge of Scotland after Berti Vogts quits. 2006: Scotland follow up wins over the Faroe Islands and Lithuania with a famous 1-0 triumph over World Cup finalists France. 2007: Quits as Scotland boss and is appointed Rangers manager. Signs three-year contract. 2011: Wins the League and League Cup and retires from Rangers after 21 trophies. 2013: May: Appointed Rangers chairman, replacing Malcolm Murray, after boardroom battle. August: Resigns as chairman amid massive turmoil at Ibrox. 2021: Passes away after illness at the age of 73.
