Motherwell boss would welcome VAR in Scotland

- By JOHN McGARRY

MOTHeRWell manager Graham Alexander is convinced that improvements in video refereeing make the implementation of the technology an increasingly attractive prospect for Scottish football. The Fir Park boss found his side on the end of another controversial moment on Wednesday when eamonn Brophy was allowed a second attempt to equalise from the spot for St Mirren following a disputed award by referee Bobby Madden. Alexander still feels Madden was wrong with both the initial award and the decision to order a retake — and TV footage appeared to show goalkeeper liam Kelly had one foot on the line when the Saints striker hit his saved penalty. initially a VAR sceptic, Alexander has expressed frustration over a number of incidents in recent weeks, including an offside goal scored by Rangers striker Fashion Sakala during an ibrox draw, and the former Scotland star is keen to see VAR introduced.

‘if that can be brought here and help the game be fair, with less mistakes, then i think that’s a good thing,’ he said. ‘When it was first talked about, i didn’t really see its value. But since then, watching how it’s worked, it has cleared up some big decisions and helped the officials.’ The dawn of the new day brought Motherwell no greater understanding of why two points were yanked from their grasp against St Mirren. Having expressed his bemusement at Madden’s decision in the immediate aftermath of Wednesday’s match, by yesterday Alexander cut a more diplomatic figure. Asked if he’d received an apology from the official, he replied: ‘No, but i’m not looking for that. if we all walked around apologising for every little mistake we make, there would be a lot of apologies from a lot of people every day. Perspective is important.’
