Killie boss condemns ‘cowardly’ bus attack

TOMMY WRIGHT has taken aim at the ‘cowardly’ actions of those responsible for attacking Kilmarnock’s team buses in the ‘scary’ aftermath of their derby victory over Ayr United. Wright insists the squad were lucky not to sustain serious injuries after objects were allegedly thrown at the coaches transferring the Rugby Park outfit to and from Somerset Park on Tuesday night. A window on one of the vehicles was smashed as Wright’s side returned home after Oli Shaw’s late penalty had earned them a dramatic 1-0 win against their local rivals and Kilmarnock are assisting police with their investigation. Wright admits he became accustomed to such incidents turning out as a player for Northern Ireland, but he insists the perpetrators of this week’s ugly episode should ‘take a long, hard look at themselves’. ‘Everyone is fine, thankfully, but it was quite scary,’ said the Killie manager. ‘I have been a victim when I got the bus home from Northern Ireland games when I was younger and the buses used to get stoned. ‘I thought the brick had actually hit my window and I was at the front of the bus, but it hit the very back window. ‘The noise was that loud I thought it was mine. ‘Luckily, there are two parts to the window and the inner bit didn’t smash. Someone could have been hurt. ‘We were stoned on the way in, then there was the incident after the game. ‘Those who did it should take a long, hard look at themselves and decide if they want to support their team by throwing stones at a bus? It’s cowardly and it shouldn’t have happened.’
