Courts believes best is yet to come from United

- By GEORGE GRANT

DUNDEE UNITED boss Tam Courts believes there is a lot more improvement to come from his Tannadice shock troops. United currently sit fourth in the table and are leading the challenge to the Old Firm along with Hearts, having embarked on a seven-game unbeaten run. Having conceded only seven goals, the joint-fewest in the division, Courts’ men have confounded expectations of what his side could hope to achieve. Ahead of hosting Tayside rivals St Johnstone this afternoon, Courts — who is set to freshen up his team by giving some fringe men a run-out — took pride in his club’s lofty position while urging the players to continue their hard work. He said: ‘We are enjoying where we are at just now in terms of league position and in terms of performances and results, but there is still a lot we want to improve on. ‘We are playing with a lot of quality, both individually and collectively. ‘Regardless if it is home or away, the structured organisation we are committing to is helping the players and we are getting a lot of consistency in performance levels. ‘So we are feeling quite good about ourselves but also respectful of each opponent that we play and there is a tough one coming up. ‘I think it will be a really tough game. You can expect to see us freshen up a little bit, so it will be good to see what the depth of the squad looks like.’ Meanwhile, opposite number Callum Davidson has insisted St Johnstone’s early-season European adventures have contributed to his side’s laboured start to the Premiership campaign. The Perth side sit tenth with ten points following their first 11 games and Davidson has lost defenders James Brown and Lars Dendoncker to injury for today’s trip to Tannadice. Injury woes have been a regular feature of Saints’ season so far and Davidson says the impact of those memorable European clashes with Galatasaray and LASK is still being felt among his squad. Davidson said: ‘The European games mixed in with the league games made it very difficult and the resulting factor is we have had a lot of injuries. It’s been a knock-on effect. ‘The best word to use is tough, but encouraging. We would all like a few more points on the board and we want to climb the league.’
