O’DONNELL JOINS CALL FOR VIDEO AID

- By JOHN McGARRY

IF refereeing decisions do indeed even themselves out over the piece, then motherwell should surely brace themselves for one or two going their way in the next round of fixtures. eamonn brophy’s retaken penalty for St mirren on Wednesday came despite there being little evidence that liam Kelly had moved off his line. The two points lost in that instance came on the back of Fashion Sakala’s offside goal at Ibrox standing and depriving Graham alexander’s side of the same reward. Throw in the manager’s belief that Kyogo Furuhashi had fouled Callum Slattery in the build-up to Celtic’s opener at Fir park a fortnight ago and the sense of injustice grows further. as the man who marked Sakala at Ibrox that day, Stephen O’Donnell would be as entitled as anyone to a sense of paranoia. a strong believer that there is nothing to be gained from dwelling on such a wretched run of luck, though, the full-back feels that human error will remain part and parcel of the game until our officials get the help they evidently need. ‘It would be great if we had VaR to take some of the pressure off the refs,’ said O’Donnell. ‘It’s a thankless task for them. Some decisions, though, just beggar belief, like when Fashion Sakala scored his offside goal in our 1-1 draw at Ibrox. ‘but that’s part and parcel of football as it stands and why it would be nice if we could afford VaR. ‘No matter where you are, you’re fighting for your club and wondering whether decisions are fair or unfair.’ The fact that motherwell still left Ibrox feeling wronged at only taking a point was a big moment for them. Cast in the role of bystanders as Rangers unfurled their first league flag in a decade, they put in an accomplished display to dampen the party mood. accordingly, alexander’s men will approach tomorrow’s lunchtime clash at Fir park with no inferiority complex. ‘It should hopefully mean we go into the game with no fear,’ O’Donnell added, with the game set to go ahead despite some flooding in the ground yesterday. ‘They will come here probably with a point to prove having drawn the other night and with the result against us previously as well. ‘The top players don’t need extra motivation but if they did need any they’ll have it.’
