My little bulldog choked to death on biscuit in Starbucks puppuccino treat

- By James Tozer

A PEt owner issued a warning yesterday after her puppy choked to death on a dog biscuit added to a ‘puppuccino’ by Starbucks staff.

Megan Harrison, 24, ordered cups of whipped cream from the chain for her three dogs – unusually, all topped with a Bonio.

But shortly after 18-week-old French bulldog Bonnie finished hers she was found dead after choking on the biscuit.

Now Miss Harrison is telling dog owners who enjoy giving their pets the frothy treats to remove any biscuits, or break them into small pieces, to stop a similar tragedy happening.

Although not officially on the menu, most Starbucks branches will serve a free ‘puppuccino’ – actually just a cup of whipped cream – for dog owners. the firm said dog biscuits are not usually provided – but claimed staff asked Miss Harrison if her dogs would like one.

Miss Harrison, who works in the care sector, bought the drinks from a branch in Stokeon-trent in September before taking them to her home in Crewe.

She said: ‘Bonnie had the puppuccino, ate the biscuit, went to get a drink of water and then lay in her bed and obviously that’s when she died, she choked. It’s heart-breaking.’ Miss Harrison said she contacted Starbucks about the incident and was offered a £250 gift card to spend in-store, but she claimed she didn’t feel she was given a sincere apology. French bulldog puppies can cost more than £3,000. Starbucks said staff had been ‘really upset’ about Bonnie’s death. Bonio maker Purina said it would not recommend serving treats to pets in a way that leaves owners unable to see feeding guidelines on a pack.
