TRIBUTES have been paid to a woman who died after falling from her horse in the Highlands.

Mhairi Mackay suffered devastating injuries in the fall from her chestnut gelding Gusto while riding across a field in Poyntzfield on the Black Isle on Tuesday evening.

She died at the scene despite efforts to save her, prompting tributes from her family, friends and members of the equestrian community.

The 33-year-old had married her husband Mike in December 2020 and was involved in the running of the Caledonian Riding Club.

The club said: ‘It is with great sadness we have to announce the passing of our vice chairperson Mhairi Mackay.

‘As a result of an accident whilst hacking on her wonderful Gusto, Mhairi sadly passed away. Our thoughts at this time are with her husband Mike and her family.

‘Mhairi was a dedicated member of the committee working tirelessly behind the scenes as well as a great competitor and supporter of all. Mhairi died doing what she absolutely loved and she will be sorely missed – sleep tight lovely lady.’

Her father, Walter Goodwin, said: ‘Our beautiful, talented and kind Mhairi had an accident while out hacking with her beloved horse Gusto. Despite the efforts of many kind people Mhairi died. We appreciate all the kind words and offers of help already received.’

Friends will wear blue ribbons in Mrs Mackay’s memory while competing in equestrian events at the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh this weekend. Mrs Mackay always wore the colours of the Saltire when she was riding in cross-country competitions on her 11-year-old horse.

A crowdfunding appeal has already raised nearly £3,000. Organiser Sandra Morrison wrote: ‘Never was there such a kind and inspirational young lady in the local equine community.’

Mrs Mackay bought Gusto seven years ago after the death of her mother. She wrote on her blog: ‘This boy means the world to me, he’s helped me through my darkest days and continues to support me through difficult times.’

A police spokesman said: ‘Officers received a report of a woman having fallen off a horse in a field in the Poyntzfield area around 9.10pm on June 21. Emergency services attended, however the 33year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The death is not being treated as suspicious.’
